A current trend emerging through the party styling and wedding circuits lately has been
INDUSTRIAL CHIC.
This style takes seemingly ordinary objects of industry and uses them as focal points, backdrops or centrepieces for dessert tables, parties and even weddings. From raw factory lighting, old tin drawers, tools and steel scaffolding, the Industrial element brings a new kind of 'wow' to party styling.
I love the interesting textures and rough, rustic surfaces that dominate this style. The neutral colour palette and clean lines offer a blank canvas to achieve many different looks. The best results are achieved by choosing one single colour that literally 'pops' out from behind the neutral grey background.
Last weekend I set up a mini photo shoot using some old metal objects I found around our house. I didn't have a lot of time, so I kept everything very simple. I chose a small aluminium builder's trestle to use as the table for my cupcakes. I simply adore the versatility of my new galvanised tin cake stands,
(purchased from 96 Styles.com.au), and used them to give height to my display. A few other tin objects, purchased from op shops and sales, complemented the cake stands and completed the look.

To keep in with the raw, almost masculine element of this Industrial look, I chose not to use any flowers. Instead, I wanted the cake and cupcakes themselves to provide the only floral element to soften the display. I enjoyed using a very rustic stroke on the feature cake, and humoured myself by trying to recreate a rendered cement type texture. I then topped it with buttercream roses in a bright lime green frosting. Simple sugar paste blossoms were added to the Honey and Lemon cupcakes which I placed generously around the display.
I was pleased with the overall Industrial look of my little table. I would love to develop this theme further. With more time, a variety of desserts and an expanded table, this unusual party theme could become a metallic grey masterpiece!
I hope you like it and feel inspired to take a walk around your yard to see what unsuspecting treasures you can find!
Enjoy!
